Most of your examples are not really a true red. They are brown, orange, and warmer variants of red. That in and of itself talks about the starkness of true reds, and how difficult they are to tastefully incorporate into a design.

Exactly. The problem with red is if you don't use it correctly, you will end up with terrible results and it will look like an amateur made it. Like you said, staying about from the "hot sexy reds" is definitely a key element in making a great design with red.

Nice! And I noticed most of them don't use the hot sexy red. Either more pastel or orange-ish. :)

Even if I prefer orange, I like the red color for design too! Good post and good websites examples. My favourite of your list are : Coal March Productions, Nitro Circus, and Logo Heroes (Just judging the color not the entire website). I really love the design and the mix with the black color in RedMillion – Creative Media. Warm colors rule!!

I think red is such a great color for design! Hence my red background on twitter. I think it should be used more, I sometimes feel that blue/greens are getting used so much that things start to look the same. Spicing it up, adding warmer colors, are a lot more inviting and show passion. Great post, thanks!
